Holistic Curriculum

An Ambitious, Holistic Curriculum to Develop the Full Potential of our Learners

Our holistic, aspirational curriculum is carefully crafted to optimise each child's development across all areas and is effectively implemented through our individualised approach to learning. Through skilful observation and assessment, careful planning and a meticulous blend of structured and play-based activities, our talented staff nurture critical preschool skills with minimal pressure and plenty of fun. Our nursery curriculum is tailored to the needs of individual learners, incorporates a blend of adult-led and child-led activities, and promotes the discovery of numerous concepts through play and exploration.

In line with the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), our stimulating nursery curriculum offers the most robust possible foundations for future learning, while our passionate, experienced teachers seek to continuously extend children’s knowledge and interests in a calm, productive and fun environment. As a result, children are fully prepared to enjoy a seamless transition into Reception.

Prime and Specific Learning Areas

There are three ‘prime areas’ of development defined within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework:

  • Communication and Language
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development

These three areas are absolutely foundational and, as such, are a strong focus for learning in the children’s first year at Wetherby Pembridge Minors.

In addition to the three ‘prime areas’ there are four ‘specific areas’ of the EYFS. These are:

  • Literacy (encompassing phonics, reading and writing)
  • Maths
  • Expressive Art and Design
  • Understanding the World

The four specific areas are taught in a cross-curricular way during the children’s first year. In their second year, once a strong foundation has been laid down in the prime areas, the four specific areas become the key focus, enabling robust preparation for the next stage of school, a balanced skill-set and creative thinking, but always maintaining a playful and age-appropriate approach.

Children are encouraged to listen, take turns, praise others and use good manners. This promotes kindness, honesty and empathy and provides a sense of security and belonging. Children emerge confident and fully equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to excel throughout their school careers.

Outdoor Learning

Outdoor Learning

In their second year, pupils visit Holland Park Ecology Centre on a weekly basis, for exciting Forest School activities that last the whole morning. By exploring and experiencing the natural environment, our children nurture their curiosity and knowledge of the world around them, and continue to develop their personal, social and linguistic skills.

Physical Development

Physical Development

Ample time is allocated to physical activities to maximise our little ones' development, as well as preparing them for future sporting excellence. Children in both year groups enjoy outdoor sessions twice a week at Wetherby School to cultivate their physical abilities in a fully equipped, self-contained playground complete with slides and a climbing wall.

Our double-height school hall offers plenty of room for daily activity, and children enjoy regular visits to Holland Park and Hyde Park throughout the week, as well as weekly TARKA sessions for both year groups.
